How To Recycle And Reuse FIBC Bulk Bags
‘‘Recycle and reuse’ is a guiding principle of the circular economy—but when it comes to Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), how do you know which option is most appropriate? This article explores how to safely reuse and responsibly recycle FIBC bulk bags, ensuring compliance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency.
Multi-Trip and Single-Trip FIBC Specifications
FIBCs are rated according to their intended use. Check the label or tag on your bag to identify its Safety Factor (SF):
- SF 5:1 indicates a single-trip bag, designed for one-time use only. These should not be reused for commercial transport, particularly on construction sites. However, these can be repurposed for domestic use such as garden waste.
- SF 6:1 denotes a multi-trip bag, which can be reused several times if properly inspected, cleaned, and maintained.
The SF rating is a requirement under ISO 21898, the international standard for FIBC safety and performance.
Understanding Safe Working Load (SWL)
Each FIBC also lists a Safe Working Load (SWL)—typically in the range of 500 kg to 2000 kg, depending on the bag. This is the maximum load the bag can safely carry under standard use. While SF 6:1 bags are tested to withstand up to six times their SWL under controlled conditions, this is strictly for certification purposes. You should never exceed the SWL in actual use, as doing so risks structural failure and operator injury.
Before reusing a multi-trip bag, it’s essential to:
- Inspect the bag for tears, abrasions, weakened seams, or UV degradation.
- Ensure it has not carried hazardous or incompatible materials.
- Confirm that the bag will carry the same contents
When handled correctly, high-quality FIBCs can often be reused dozens of times, depending on site conditions and compliance protocols.
What to Do With Old Bags
So, what should you do with used 5:1 single-trip bags or 6:1 bags that are no longer fit for transport?
If a bag is no longer compliant or reusable, consider one of the following options:
- Repurpose it for non-commercial applications, such as collecting garden waste, storing tools, or using it in DIY projects.
- Use it in allotments or gardens to grow vegetables—but only if the bag has not previously transported hazardous or harmful materials, and has been thoroughly cleaned.
- Recycle it through appropriate plastic recovery schemes. FIBCs supplied by Cliffe Packaging are made from woven polypropylene (plastic #5 / PP), which is widely recyclable across the UK.
Note: Woven PP bags are not always accepted through household kerbside recycling. For best results, contact your local council or a commercial recycling facility to ensure proper disposal.
